Has had talks with the Chinese ... Byo mayor, Martin Moyo

FIVE senior Bulawayo City Council officials will this month travel to China, to facilitate the twinning of the city, with China’s city of Qingdao.

The trip, which is being facilitated by the Ministry of Macro Economic Planning and Investment Promotion, is meant to promote investment in Zimbabwe’s second largest city.

Bulawayo has twinning arrangements with several authorities in South Africa and the local authority is mooting another twinning arrangement with Francistown in Botswana.

This is not the first time that attempts have been made to get twinning arrangements with Chinese cities.

In 2013, Bulawayo launched twinning arrangements talk with the Chinese city of Siping.

China has become Zimbabwe’s key trading partner with President Mugabe turning to the Asian powerhouse after his fallout with Western countries.

The local authority, in April, received a letter from the Minister of State for Bulawayo requesting a delegation to travel to China.

“The Ministry of Macro Economic Planning and Investment Promotion will be coordinating an Investment Promotion trip to Qingdao, China early May 2016. Delegates coordinated by the office of the Honourable Minister of State for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province are invited to take part in this trip to promote investment for Bulawayo.

“His Worship the Mayor Cllr Martin Moyo and the Honourable Eunice N Moyo participated in the initial round table meeting with the Chinese delegation in Harare on the 6th of January 2016.

"This visit in May 2016 is a culmination of the talks done earlier this year. Bulawayo City Council is therefore requested to come up with a delegation of at least 5 people which may include the His Worship the Mayor and four other technocrats that will accompany the Honourable Minister to Qingdao, China. The revival of Bulawayo requires a joint effort that will guarantee the turnaround of industry in the City," the letter read in part.

Some of the areas in which council hopes to benefit from this twinning arrangement are, water reticulation, waste management and disposal, business opportunities, as well as housing, community and social services departmental opportunities.

The delegation that will travel to China includes the Mayor, Martin Moyo, Acting Town Clerk, Sikhangele Zhou, Director of Engineering Services Engineer, Simela Dube, Acting City Economic Development Officer ,Brian Hlongwane and Senior Public Relations Officer, Nesisa Mpofu.
