Setting the record straight: No true prophets today

TO those who doubt that today we only have pretentious conmen posing as prophets, this verse brings finality:

“In the past, God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in THESE last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he created the world” Hebrews 1:1-2

Following my last instalment titled ‘Why there can’t be any true prophets today,’ there has been intense debate over the seemingly complex yet straight forward subject. Consequently, a number of responses in email have requested for further clarity on the issue.

I wish to categorically reiterate that this current world has absolutely no class of prophets of biblical times and that for good reasons. Today, there are people calling themselves apostles and prophets claiming that they speak for God although speaking things outside of God’s Word like soccer matches, political events and identity numbers. Now, if there is one thing that you will get out of reading my writings it is this: there is a huge difference between the “gift” of prophecy (defending and teaching forth the established Word of God) and the “office” of the prophet (speaking new revelations as a spokesperson for God.) It is the GIFT OF PROPHECY which is still operational but not the OFFICE OF PROPHET   and the rest of this article is devoted towards showing this plain biblical truth. The same is very true for the craze of apostles: the gift versus the office of Apostle which, however, is discussion for another day.

No prophets today

One thing is very clear: the entire confusion in Christianity today stems from a highly misleading definition of the terms ‘prophet’ and ‘prophesy.’ In fact, ignorance over these terms has materially benefited those branding themselves prophets. Nearly 90% of people in Christendom today do not understand what it means to prophesy neither do they know what role the prophet played. The Bible clarifies the meaning of prophecy:

Rev 19:10: “Worship only God. For the testimony of Jesus is the voice of prophecy”

Brethren, as denoted, the true essence of prophecy is to testify the knowledge of Jesus Christ. A person defending and teaching forth the established Word of God and the depth of Jesus Christ (office of the prophet) is what the Bible identifies as prophesying. That is prophecy in its purest form. It is far removed from spiritism and divination where people predict people’s passport numbers or bank accounts. True prophesy is testifying about Jesus Christ. Of course, a prophet could be used in Old Testament times to tell about the future yet this was not and has never been the essence of prophecy; it was simply an element.

Further evidence

People today quote Malachi 4:5-6 to justify the mushrooming number of the so called prophets by saying that there will be an end time prophet named Elijah (that’s why we have so many Elijahs today.) Again, the simple truth is revealed by Jesus in Matt 1:14 that this was already fulfilled in John the Baptist. John was the last prophet:

“For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it,   he is the Elijah who was to come. He who has ears, let him hear.”

Again, there is a painfully erroneous grasp of the following verse:

“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams” Acts 2:17

As highlighted before, the prophesying referred therein is far different from the prediction of soccer events, people’s physical addresses or colour of underwear as we are seeing today. Notice the word ‘all’ in that verse. This indicates ALL people will receive the Holy Spirit, because everyone who accepts the Saviour Jesus Christ and enters the millennial kingdom would be redeemed. The prophesying is exactly what the Bible teaches throughout that they will proclaim and reveal the testimony of Jesus Christ (true prophecy.)

Perhaps there is no better scriptural evidence that conclusively proves that the Old Testament -style prophets so loved today is no longer in use as the book of Hebrews states. To those who doubt that today we only have pretentious conmen posing as prophets, this verse has finality:

“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,2 but in THESE last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things…”

The following scripture is usually used to prove that there are prophets and apostles in this age:

“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers…” (Eph 2:20)

Again, it is painfully sad to realize that they fail to read this passage in its context. Going back to verse 7 you will see that it is talking about GIFTS of apostle, prophet, evangelist and pastor or teacher not the office.

To conclude, the clear abolishment of the OFFICE of the prophet as proved by scripture renders all that we are witnessing today a circus.
