THE death of Apostle Charles Chiriseri, a prominent clergymen and founder of His Presence Ministries International, on 15 September last year in a horrific car accident has become subject of many theories following the mysterious and successive deaths of three men including a policemen accused of looting goods and cash at the accident scene.

The late Apostle Chiriseri met a painful death when his vehicle rammed into a tree at the 34 km peg along Bulawayo Harare highway. It was an unexpected death which sent the Christian community into grief. It was unbelievable that the man who had last been seen fit and alive in Harare a few hours before had died. His wife, however, survived the horrific accident.

Now the focal point of the accident is the alleged theft of the deceased’s valuables at the accident scene by three men: a bus conductor, fireman and a police officer. The bus conductor allegedly stole a Samsung S6 cellphone. He died on 9 November exactly two months after the death of Chiriseri.

Honest Hleza, a fire-fighter with Bulawayo Fire Brigade who allegedly stole a laptop from the scene died a month later. The core accused police officer who allegedly stole $200 cash and was set to appear in court in was recently hit by a car while manning a roadblock at the same spot.

Local press has thus covered extensively the matter with heavy innuendos that the late pastor’s spirit was exacting revenge on the men for apparently robbing him in death. The thread was further carried forward by contemporary churches with an emphasis on a gospel of revenge.

Just weeks ago, one Harare pastor declared that he would kill all witches and people causing misfortune in the lives of others. This was actually laughable if it were not sad. The prerogative, as I have mentioned several times, remains God‘s. The gospel of revenging enemies has taken amazing root and this is further evidenced by popular songs like ‘Back to sender.” This cancerous teaching may be with us for a long time seeing as it is that the new breed of Christianity led by modern prophets thinks it biblical to fight fire with fire. This has been drilled in their followers that it has now taken a colour of truth despite it being the exact opposite of what Christ taught. The concept of revenge is a travesty of the Christian faith.

Against this background, the wife of the late clergyman, Mrs Chiriseri, must be applauded for her alleged candid response in State media last week when she dispelled the revenge claims citing the precise biblical position on the matter of revenge. She was reported as dispelling the revenge claims and believes God came to give life and life in abundance as in John 10 and not to bring death. She does not even believe in praying for people to die. And true indeed, God says “vengeance is mine.”

Jesus Christ taught the opposite of the prevailing doctrine today. “Do not repay evil with evil but instead repay evil with good.” Again he stated, “If a man asks to go with you for a mile go with him for two miles.

The Bible teaches against the principle of revenge in many ways than one and, in essence, encourages true Christians to “pray for your enemies and to do good to them that persecute you.” This biblical teaching is at variance with the desires of the world.

It is commonplace that the natural and carnal thing to do is to slap on the left cheek to him he who slaps you on the right cheek yet Christ taught, “If a man slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other cheek also for him to strike. This is the teaching that you won’t hear in contemporary movements. They have actually concocted their own gospel. God, dear reader, is not one to pull the trigger at the drop of a feather. Among his chief attributes, God is a large-hearted Father, one who is quick to forgive and loath to punish.

Now human nature being what it is, seeks, through revenge pronouncements today, to smuggle heresy to Christianity by teaching huge error that it is right to inflict pain on enemies .God is love. Before he exacts revenge, he gives time to repent. This famous principle is further reinforced in the story of the woman caught in adultery. Christ, unlike human nature, did not allow the mob to have its way with the woman but instead said, “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.”

This is what true Christianity is about: quick to forgive but loath to find fault. It appears the damage being currently done to the true biblical position on revenge will take time to mend. There is now virtually no difference from what the devil does and what supposed Christians  are doing; They all fighting fire with fire.

May it be put on record that this message of revenge being peddled in the charismatic church is totally unchristian, unethical and a mockery of the true biblical message. Christians do not repay evil with evil. The scriptural message is: repay evil with good.
