Return ... British Airways stop flights to Zimbabwe after 62 years

A SENIOR Zimbabwe aviation official said Wednesday that British Airways would start flights to the country next year, two years after abandoning the route on viability grounds.

Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe chief executive officer David Chaota said the airline had agreed to resume flights to Zimbabwe between March and April next year after negotiations.

British Airways pulled out of Zimbabwe two years ago, citing viability problems, but observers suspected it had been pressured by London, which opposed President Robert Mugabe's government, to withdraw.

Chaota said the return of the airline would draw more tourists and airlines to Zimbabwe, which has been shunned for years over political instability.

"British Airways will be coming back next year between March and April, and that is why we have hope (of more tourists) in 2010. The coming back of BA may also bring in other airlines," he said.

Until it pulled out in 2007, British Airways had operated in Zimbabwe for close to 100 years. - PANA

I dont know what the problem is. People want a good airline to take them home and its fair to say BA has a good reputation . As for Air zim , it will never suceed until political intereference stops. As it stands it has a monopoly on the lucrative London-Hre route, but what have they got to show for it besides short notice cancellations and continous delays? A small airline like this will be forever loss making until it agrees a partnership or code sharing with a larger sucessful one.Kana vasingadi varungu, the Arabs and Asian countries have the best airlines such as Emirates and Malaysian Airlines. All they need is sell say 10% to one of these and benefit from route sharing and also we learn how they run sucessfully. Its a no brainer, any average Joe will know it makes sense but our politicians dont get it, despite being ana Dr nhingi and having 2 by 2 degrees each. Its high time they swallowed their pride and acknowledge there is no shame in learning from those who can do it better.
