Snubbed ... Ronaldo will not be coming to Zimbabwe

ALL 32 teams playing in the 2010 Fifa World Cup will set up base in the host country, dealing a blow to South Africa’s neighbours who were hoping to lure some of the teams.

Zimbabwe lobbied heavily, once dispatching the Tourism Minister to Brazil to entice the five-time world champions to set up a pre-tournament camp in the country. Christiano Ronaldo's Portugal had also been approached.

But Fifa confirmed on Thursday that all 32 teams had identified their bases, the majority concentrated around Gauteng Province.

The World Cup runs between June 11 and July 11.

World champions Italy chose the Leriba Lodge in Centurion just outside Pretoria, while Brazil will be camped at The Fairway in Johannesburg.

Germany picked the Velmore Hotel in Pretoria, the same city as Diego Maradona's Argentina, North Korea, New Zealand, Ghana and Slovakia.

Spain will take over the NWU Campus in Potchefstroom while England have identified the Bafokeng Sports Campus in Rustenburg.

Shingi Munyeza, the group CEO of Africa Sun Limited, said their campaign to bring some teams to Zimbabwe was always a long shot. He insists Zimbabwe still stands to benefit from tourists coming across the border.

He said: “The first thing is that you have to realise that the tournament will be held in South Africa. Ours was to take the left-overs.

“Zimbabwe and other countries will benefit in terms of the awareness that the tournament has brought for the region and the tourists who will visit other attractions outside South Africa. We will benefit but we must be clear that the tournament is in South Africa, not Zimbabwe.”

Munyeza said the coalition partners in the government need to speak with one voice in selling the country as a favourable tourist destination to thousands of football fans expected in South Africa from around the world.

You guys are Mugabeforbia. Is Zimbabwe the only country in southern africa. All the 32 teams are camping in south africa.why didn't they go to mozanbique, zambia, botwana, malawi ,namibia, angola and so on. why is zimbabwe an issue here? if zimbabwe was so bad as you say, then what prevented them from camping in the countries i mentioned above.you guys have negative attitudes about zimbabwe. if zimbabwe was the only country left out from southern africa i would have agreed with your arguments. your arguments are baseless, but mainly based on hatred. This site has become tribalisit especeally the ndebeles. we shonas do not have any beef with you. when ndebeles in diaspora are asked where the are from, they say they are from south africa, yet you demanding to have yr own seperate state in matebeleland. hamurume cos you guys are foreigners and came fm south africa after mzuzilikazi fled with stolen cattle frm shaka.yr shonas in diaspora don't be drawn into critising yr country by vatorwa.

SOME OF US ARE LETTING OUR EMOTIONS DO THE TALKING, THE PIECE SAYS THEY SHUNNED THE ENTIRE REGION FOR SA BASES NOT JUST ZIM HAWU!!!!truth be told though it would never have worked until we sorted the transport issue ,,,, the air fares between SA and Zim are a rip off and the Shingis of this world need to address that if they hope that there will be tourist visiting ZIm.Dont know about other countries but i know that the guys that are really into football kwaGordon are not rich and blive what they hear onSky and until Sky endorse Zim as a safe for the british haven.....it will always be punching above ones weight to expect them to visit Zim, Besides Zim needs to sort themselves out .... the pricing of everything is highly inflated just like the egos of those in power
