Sam Mtukudzi dies in car crash

THESE pictures are the only clues to the horrifying final moments of Sam Mtukudzi’s life in the early hours of Monday.

The 22-year-old son of the legendary singer, Oliver, died in a car crash after this white TATA pick-up truck driven by his friend jumped lanes while approaching this low bridge on the Harare-Bulawayo highway, near Kuwadzana Extension, and smashed through the railings.

Saxophone sensation Sam, who released his debut album Rume Rimwe in 2008, died on the spot along with his 24-year-old friend and sound engineer, Owen Chimhare.

The front right side of the truck appeared to have taken most of the impact, but amazingly the car’s interior appears almost intact.

Police say the pair suffered serious head injuries on impact and were trapped in the car. Paramedics arrived at the scene just after 1.30AM on Monday but both men were already dead.

Investigations into the accident are still ongoing, and police say they have found no evidence of a second car being involved in the crash.

The pair, who lived in Norton, were returning from the Harare International Airport where they expected to pick up Oliver Mtukudzi and wife, Daisy. When they were already at the airport, Mtukudzi advised them of a change of his flight plans
