A NEW Zealand woman has told officials she fears she is among the victims of HIV-positive circus performer Godfrey Zaburoni who is suspected of infecting hundreds of women in Australia.
Queensland police allege Godfrey Zaburoni knew he was HIV positive when he had unprotected sex with at least 37 women.
The 31-year-old is facing charges over infecting two women, but regional crime co-ordinator Detective Superintendent Dave Hutchinson said the acrobat may have infected hundreds of people.
A police spokeswoman said a New Zealand woman had contacted authorities and was "assisting with inquiries".
She refused to say if the woman was HIV positive, when she was involved with Zaburoni or how they met.
Meanwhile Zaburoni’s Sydney girlfriend said she was standing by her man and offered to put up the $5000 demanded by the Brisbane Supreme Court as surety for his bail.
The woman said in an affidavit that she is Godfrey Zaburoni's current partner and they have been living together in a unit at Blacktown in Sydney.
"I have a very loving relationship with Godfrey and have been in regular contact with him during the time that he has been in custody," the woman said in an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court in Brisbane.
She said that she was aware of the charges Zaburoni was facing.
Zaburoni had remained behind bars after a judge granted him conditional bail last Tuesday but officials said arrangements to pay the surety had been made and they expected him to be released.
The Zimbabwe-born acrobat, who has been in Australia since December, 1997, and is a permanent resident, has allegedly given police the names of 12 women with whom he had unprotected sex.
