THE Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has claimed that members in Matebeleland South province are being forced to contribute cash towards President Robert Mugabe’s birthday bash.

Celebrations to mark the Zanu PF leader’s 93rd birthday will be held at Matopos in about a fortnight with some $9m reportedly budgeted for the event.

In a statement Thursday, ARTUZ leader Obert Masaraure said thousands of teachers in the province have been fleeced by Mugabe and organisers of the event.

Complaints about the shakedown have reportedly come from schools such as Mawabeni Primary and Secondary School, Mzingwane High School, Mvuthu Primary and Secondary schools and Mbalabala Secondary among others.

“This shameless thief, Mugabe, is also tormenting impoverished and starving villagers for chickens, goats and cattle to feed his bootlickers and hoodlums who will throng his self-serving jamboree commemorating his 93rd birthday that falls on 21 February, 2017,” said Masaraure.

“This unbridled act of greed and tyranny should be condemned with full contempt. For Mugabe to want to steal from the poor teachers and villagers whom he has robbed of dignity and welfare is unacceptable and criminal.”

He added: “It must dawn to this tyrant that teachers and indeed, ordinary Zimbabweans owe him nothing to part with their monies celebrating his long worthless life.

“Mugabe does not deserve any presents and knows no one will give him any.”

The ARTUZ leader condemned Mugabe over his government’s failure to pay civil servants’ salaries on time and accused the Zanu PF leader of being responsible for the collapse of the country’s economy.

“No one will miss Mugabe after he is gone and even those who congratulated his mother on the eve of his birthday regret ever having done so as he is a monumental failure with no parallel in history,” Masaraure said.
