MUTARE: A Sakubva man who heavily assaulted his wife after she tested HIV positive was slapped with a one month jail term by a local magistrate.
Tinashe Bepura was, however, lucky after the magistrate gave him an option to pay a $100 fine.
He pleaded guilty to contravening the Domestic Violence Act.
Asked why he committed the offence, Bepura said: “Your Worship this woman is promiscuous. She recently tested HIV positive and wants to continue sleeping around that’s why I assaulted her to stop her from behaving this way.”
Bepura said he was negative but failed to provide the court with proof.
Prosecutors told the court that Bepura came home on February 24 drunk around 22 00 hrs. He reportedly started shouting insults before falling asleep.
He woke up in the early hours of the following morning and started shouting on top of his voice accusing his wife of having an extra marital affair with a local police officer.
Bepura then assaulted and kicked his wife in the stomach with booted feet.
He was later restrained by his neighbours and the matter was reported to police leading to his arrest.
