Boisterous laughter as Chinotimba tells speaker MDC MP called Maziwisa 'gay'

PARLIAMENT was Wednesday left in stitches when Zanu PF MP for Buhera South Joseph Chinotimba stood to tell the Speaker of National Assembly an opposition MP had called Highfields MP Psychology Maziwisa gay.

This was after Maziwisa had asked energy minister Samuel Undenge if his ministry had plans for the vulnerable old in his constituency to relieve them of the burden of high electricity tariffs paid by those in employment.

But what followed his question were more hilarious scenes in which Chinotimba sprang from his seat to allege Musikavanhu MP Prosper Mutseyami had called Maziwisa a “gay”.

“My point of order Mr Speaker, when honourable Maziwisa was asking his question, the honourable members sitting by your left were saying Maziwisa is gay. It’s Mutseyami who was saying so," Chinotimba said amid wild laughter from MDC-T legislators who claimed it was in fact Chinotimba who was creating the claims.

Speaker Jacob Mudenda reluctantly ordered an indignant MDC-T legislator to withdraw his statement but Mutseyami, looking more surprised, said he never uttered the words

“In terms of our standing orders, we need to maintain the decorum of the house and avoid name calling, unsubstantiated.

“Honourable Mutseyami, if you said so please withdraw the statement,” Mudenda said to which Mutseyami denied, saying, “Ko ndingataura kuti ingochani ndakamborara naye here (How can I say he is gay. Have I ever slept with him)?”

Youthful Maziwisa kept his cool as he became the butt of what was evidently an uncomfortable joke.

It is, however, not the first time Maziwisa has been dragged into a gay storm.

Since opening up on his experiences with his former benefactor at a home in South Africa, the orphaned Maziwisa has found it difficult to wade off the claims especially by Zanu PF rivals.

Maziwisa opened up in an interview with a South African paper in 2012 that he once repelled sexual advances by Peter Roebuck-a late former cricketer.

Meanwhile, Undenge said in his response to Maziwisa that Zimbabwe’s power utility had no special tariff relief package for the aged but said this was a matter which could best be handled by the social welfare department.
