Zipra cadres in own separate heroes day fete

Not yet uhuru ... ZIPRA vets spokesman, Petros Sibanda

ZIPRA Veterans Association has this year organized parallel national commemorations to honour cadres for the role they played during the liberation struggle.

The association’s Petros Sibanda said the ZIPRA inaugural heroes commemorations which are jointly organized by a local pressure group, Ibhetshu LikaZulu will be held at Lady Stanley cemetery in Bulawayo on Monday.

Zapu has declared Lady Stanley Cemetery its de facto hero’s acre after Zanu PF is seemingly reluctant to accord hero status to a number of ZIPRA and ZAPU cadres.

Addressing journalists at the Bulawayo Media centre on Friday, Sibanda said years of political isolation by the government has led the ZIPRA ex-combatants to organize their own parallel hero’s celebrations.

“In our commitment to contribute to the proper definition of a  hero, and in our quest to correct this country’s distorted history , ZPRA in conjunction with iBhetshu likaZulu will this heroes holiday commemorate and honor all unsung heroes of Zimbabwe , most of them being ZAPU leaders and ZPRA freedom fighters. Our people are not free under the present government. The suppression of the contribution by ZAPU and ZPRA speaks to the oppression and violation of our children ‘s right to know who their true liberators are,” said Sibanda.

Sibanda said his organization is disturbed and bitter about the deliberate portrayal of Zanu PF and Zanla as the only liberation champions who single handedly fought for the country’s freedom.

“During annual heroes celebrations, we are not spared the humiliation of watching the nation honoring those who never contributed anything to the creation and development of this nation while the gallant heroes are ignored simply because they belong to a different political conviction. As an example, we could contrast between Swazini Ndlovu who was overlooked and Border Gezi who lies at the national shrine as a national hero. That is not mentioning Lookout Masuku and others,” Sibanda said.

The secretary said Zapu president who is also the veterans Commander –In- Chief will give a keynote address during the commemorations.

Several entertainment activities for the occasion have been lined up including poetry performance and revolutionary music.
