DEFENCE forces commander, General Constantino Chiwenga, has demanded that Zanu PF stops “forthwith” the purging of party members with a liberation war background.

This comes after President Robert Mugabe fired former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa, accusing him of trying to takeover power.

Following Mnangagwa's ouster, the ruling party has been readying a mass purge of cabinet ministers and senior party officials said to be allies of the sacked former vice president.

But Chiwenga, Mnangagwa loyalist, called a press conference in Harare Monday where he demanded a halt to the expulsions.

“The current purging, of which is clearly targeting members of the party with a liberation background must stop forthwith,” Chiwenga said in a statement read at Defence House in the capital.
