Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid tribute to the retired President Robert Mugabe saying he hold no grudges against him and will continue respecting him as a leader.

Mnangagwa was addressing the nation after his inauguration as the President at a ceremony held at National Sports Stadium in Harare.

He outlined "strong" reasons for honouring Mugabe who fired him as Vice President over two weeks ago.

"Let me at this stage pay special tribute to one of and the only surviving founding father our nation comrade Robert Gabriel Mugabe.

"He led us in our struggle for national independence and assumed responsibilities of leadership at the formative and very challenging time in the birth of our nation.

"That is to be lauded and celebrated for all times," he said.

"Whatever errors of commission or commission that might have occurred during that critical phase in the life of our nation to me personally, he remains a father, mentor, comrade-in-arms and my leader.

"We thus say thank you to him and trust that our history will grant him his proper place and accord him his deserved stature as one of the founders and leaders of our nation.

Mugabe was in power since 1980.

Mnangagwa was appointed Vice President in December 2014 taking over from Joice Mujuru after she was fired from the party. He was expelled exactly 18 days ago and was reinstated by the Central Committee last Sunday after the committee voted out Mugabe.

This followed demonstrations by Zimbabweans against Mugabe. Prior to that, the army had placed Mugabe under house arrest forcing him to resign.

Mugabe and his wife over the past months openly attacked Mnangagwa, calling him names and degrading him in public during youth rallies held across the country.

They accused him of dividing Zanu PF and plotting a coup among other things.
Grace called Mnangagwa a snake and described him as boy who got into office through her husband's benevolence.
