MUTARE: Like the late Nelson Mandela who continued to work after he was diagnosed with cancer, MDC T president, Morgan Tsvangirai, will continue to be at the helm of the party despite suffering serious health challenges, an official said.

MDC-T Secretary general Douglas Mwonzora told party supporters in the eastern border city recently that senior members should stop jostling for Tsvangirai`s position  as he was still their leader.

“Morgan Tsvangirai is still our leader and to those who are saying he is ill let me tell you that there are African leaders who ruled their countries well despite facing health challenges.

"Nelson Mandela had cancer but he ruled his country after he released from prison.

“We have Zambian President Lungu who cast his vote while he was sick but he is still there. We have the likes of Mwai Kibaki who ruled from the wheel chair as well as Nigerian president who is ill. Boris Yeltsin from Russia ruled for four to eight years while sick.

“If they did it so Morgan can do it too,” said Mwonzora.

There have been media reports of serious power struggles in the MDC-T as the senior party officials try to succeed Tsvangirai who was diagnosed with cancer of the colon.

However MDC-T vice president Elias Mudzuri has since denied the reports that there are power struggles between him and fellow deputies in the party, Nelson Chamisa and Thokozani Khupe, saying “they are a figment of people`s imagination”.

Meanwhile, MDC-T youths leader, Happymore Chidziva said Zanu PF may “kill” Tsvangirai “on social media and newspapers but his vision for a new democratic Zimbabwe will never die”.
