GWANDA police on Tuesday had a torrid time controlling an angry mob that wanted to mete out instant justice on a man who was arrested a few hours after stabbing a gold panner to death in a fight over a prostitute.

Alifao Munsanka, 24, from Makole village in Binga was found dead leaning against the wall of a house in Phakama Township where he had staggered to seek help having been stabbed four times all over his body in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Munsanka's lifeless body was discovered that morning.

Matabeleland South Acting Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Loveness Mangena, confirmed the arrest of Tungamirai Kokerai, 25, saying investigations were continuing.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that Munsanka had hired a prostitute from a local night club and as they were walking home around 3am Kokerai, who allegedly is a "regular" client, pounced on them demanding to know why Munsanka was walking with his girlfriend.

A fight broke out between the two with Kokerai pulling out an Okapi knife and stabbing the deceased twice on the left shoulder, once on the thigh and once on the buttocks.

However all hell broke loose when friends of the deceased arrived and started assaulting prostitutes gathered at the murder scene demanding to know who had killed Munsanka.

As the commotion ensued two police officers were spotted metres away with the murder suspect in handcuffs while some members of the public followed baying for the suspected killer’s blood.

Police officers, sensing danger, then whisked the suspect to a nearby house.

Police warning shots to disperse the angry crowd were not enough to bring calm. Eventually, almost thirty police officers from the Support Unit and Dog Section managed to whisk away the suspect as some in the crowd threw stones.

Kokerai is set to appear in court by Thursday to answer to murder charges.
