PRIME Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has been re-elected unopposed as leader of the MDC-T ahead of the party’s national congress at the end of the month.

Party spokesman Nelson Chamisa said Tsvangirai was nominated unopposed for another term in office by all the party’s provinces. By the time he completes his new five-year term, he would have been at the helm  of the party for SEVENTEEN years.

“The party would be announcing the final list of nominees (for other positions) on Tuesday after their confirmation on whether they want to contest or not,” a statement issued on Saturday read.

The MDC-T will hold its three-day national congress at Bulawayo’s Barbourfields Stadium next week.

Kenya Prime Minister Raila Odinga will officially open the meeting which is expected to be attended by about 6,000 delegates.

The congress comes at a time the party is riven by divisions. Elections to choose provincial executives have been marred by violent clashes between rival factions.

Election results had to nullified in Bulawayo, Masvingo and Midlands North after clashes between supporters of rival candidates.

A re-run of the Bulawayo elections was aborted again on Friday following violent clashes which reportedly left at least ten people injured and several vehicles smashed in the city.

Twenty party youths were arrested for public violence.
