A CHIEF has appeared in court charged with driving without a licence.

Chief Bekezela Sibasa, of Masibambaneni Village in Filabusi, was stopped by police at a roadblock along the Plumtree-Bulawayo highway while driving his government-issued Mitsubishi truck on April 16.

After failing to produce a licence, the 29-year-old was arrested and charged with contravening Section 6 of the Road Traffic Act.

Chief Sibasa appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Charity Maphosa on Thursday to plead guilty to the offence.

In mitigation, the chief said his driver – who was also in the vehicle – was not well after skipping his diabetes medication.

He was remanded out of custody to May 3 for sentencing.
