A CID detective has been jailed for 10 days and demoted for using President Robert Mugabe’s toilet.

Sergeant Alois Mabhunu answered the call of nature at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo on May 6 by cheekily using a mobile toilet reserved for Mugabe and VIP guests including his daughter, Bona.

Now he has been withdrawn from CID duties and will revert to being a uniformed regular officer when he is released from his short prison stint, Radio VoP reported on Wednesday.

Mabhunu, who was based at West Commonage Police Station, was not accused of a criminal offence when he appeared before an internal police tribunal on Tuesday, but was convicted of “breach of standards of professional behaviour”.

Mabhunu has appealed against the tribunal’s findings to Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri, Radio VoP reported.

The tribunal heard that Mabhunu barged his way through even as police colleagues tried to prevent him from using the President’s toilet. A report was later made to Mugabe’s security team and Mabhunu was arrested on May 7.

Bulawayo police spokesman Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo declined to discuss the tribunal’s ruling, describing it as an “internal matter”.
