MORGAN Tsvangirai “is not preparing for a wedding”, his spokesman said last night even as the widowed Prime Minister admitted that he is “dating” and “very happy”.

“The Prime Minister remains seized with the work of government, I’m happy to report,” Luke Tamborinyoka told New Zimbabwe.com. “I don’t know of any impending wedding, the Prime Minister is not preparing for a wedding.”

Tsvangirai, whose wife, Susan, died in a car crash in March 2009, has been linked with a string of women over the last 12 months – and had to deal with claims that he fathered a child with a 23-year-old Bulawayo woman.

In a newspaper interview published on Sunday, the 59-year-old father of six confirmed that he was seeing someone, but would not reveal a name.

“I’m dating and I’m very happy. We haven't made a decision yet with regards to marriage,” Tsvangirai told The Daily News on Sunday.

Tsvangirai feels media reports of his alleged courtships have tended to suggest he has “no right to date”.

“You have a right to date, and I also have a right to date. Nobody has a right to say the Prime Minister should or should not date,” he said.

He said marriage was a “serious commitment”, adding: “You don’t marry somebody you have known for a day.

“There are so many complications in my life. I have grown up kids, I have this responsibility as Prime Minister and I have got my politics to pursue. I don’t want these things to interfere with my choices.”

It has been confirmed that Tsvangirai is paying for the upkeep of Loreta Nyathi and her six-month-old son, Ethan, after she threatened to sue him for child maintenance in March. There has been no official confirmation or denial that the child is Tsvangirai’s.

Media reports have also linked Tsvangirai with Harare businesswoman, Locadia Karimatsenga Tembo; a United States-based Zimbabwean medical doctor, Arikana Chihombori; his late wife’s sister, Leah Mhundwa, and Bulawayo resident, Aquilina Kayidza Pamberi, who announced in January she was divorcing her husband after telling friends the Prime Minister had promised to marry her.
