THIEVES looking to bust into a safe miscalculated the strength of their explosives and ended up destroying the entire loot, police said.

Three men broke into a service station in Norton, near Harare, and were looking to snatch an easy bounty when things went wrong.

After tying up a staff member, the trio took to the safe and attempted to crack it with a explosive device. Unfortunately the result was that the entire safe was destroyed, including US$4,200 worth of banknotes.

Police arrived soon after to release the witness who said the robbers had fled empty handed after watching the bounty go up in flames.

Police spokesman Clemence Mabgweazara told the Herald: “One of the robbers stood guard while the others forced their way into the manager's office where the safe is kept.

“They then planted an explosive device on the top right corner of the safe deposit box and detonated it to gain access to the money.

“Investigations are currently under way, but we have not yet apprehended any suspects.”
