FEARS grew for Vice President John Nkomo’s health on Wednesday after second Vice President Joice Mujuru – in the middle of mourning her husband who was killed in a house fire early Tuesday – was named Acting President.
President Robert Mugabe left the country on Tuesday to attend a two-day SADC heads of state meeting in Angola which concludes on Thursday.
While Mujuru and Nkomo normally alternate in Mugabe’s absence, she was not expected to be thrust in the role of Acting President within hours of her husband, Rtd General Solomon Mujuru’s horrific death.
As reported on New Zimbabwe.com, Nkomo was admitted to an exclusive South African clinic in late July after collapsing at his official residence in Harare.
Since then, he has not been seen in public, despite Zanu PF officials indicating that he had returned home after undergoing routine “check-ups”. He missed the Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day celebrations last week, and has not been seen at the Mujuru family home where senior government officials have been flocking since Tuesday.
Nkomo, 76, is believed to be battling a cancer-related illness.
