ZVISHAVANE police have launched a major investigation into claims FIFTEEN schoolboys were sexually abused by a caretaker.

Takaedza Maripoko, 35, was seized on Friday as detectives swooped on Chirere Primary School.

Midlands police spokesman Inspector Patrick Chademana said: “He is in police custody and we have deployed units on the ground who are now carrying out investigations. We believe there could be more victims.”

Detectives believe Marikopo targeted his victims during lunch breaks and sporting events. Many of the boys were lured to a storeroom at the school where the abuse allegedly took place.

Many of the victims were too scared to report the abuse earlier after being threatened with death, police say.

Police moved in after one boy, thought to be his last victim, reported the attack. Detectives say all the reported attacks took place in a space of two months.

Medical teams and counsellors have been to the school in a massive inter-departmental operation. The school has been temporarily closed.

Maripoko appeared before a Kwekwe magistrate late Friday and was remanded in custody.
