AN INQUEST into the death in a farm blaze of liberation war hero and former army commander General Solomon Mujuru begins in open court next Monday.
Police have so far declined to publish their findings after an exhaustive investigation into the August 16, 2011, fire on Mujuru’s farm in Beatrice
Rex Shana, the Judicial Services Commission’s deputy secretary, said on Thursday: “Tentatively, the matter is set down to begin from the January 16 to 20. That could change, depending on the availability of forensic witnesses from South Africa.”
The late army chief’s widow, Vice President Joice Mujuru, has been pressing police to give her answers over her husband’s death, but investigators opted for the inquest route.
A magistrate will question witnesses and lead evidence in open court.
Chief magistrate Mishrod Guvamombe confirmed that the docket had been handed over to the court.
He told News Day: “The matter is now before the courts and I cannot comment any further.”
General Mujuru, a powerful political player in Zanu PF, was killed when an unexplained fire razed his Beatrice farmhouse just before midnight. His charred remains were removed from the 14-room farmhouse and buried at the National Heroes’ Acre.
