TWO men have been charged in Bulawayo after police seized cocaine worth US$103,000.

Truman Adam, 29, who runs a market stall in Harare and Elasto Mugwadi, 41, a scrap metal dealer in Bulawayo appeared in court on Tuesday.

The two men were arrested just after 3PM last Friday near the Large City Hall after walking into a police ambush.

Masimba Saruwaka, prosecuting, said detectives received a tip-off that the pair had arranged to sell 2kgs of cocaine.

Police lay in wait at the spot where the deal was to happen, and when the two turned up they were placed under arrest.

A bag was recovered from Adam which contained the cocaine.

Mugwadi’s lawyer indicated he would plead guilty to charges of possession of drugs with an intention to sell.

Adam will offer a defence that he was asked to carry a bag by Mugwadi but had no idea it contained drugs.

Magistrate Shepherd Mjanja remanded the pair out of custody on US$400 bail each. They will return to court on August 8 for the continuation of their trial.

The two men must surrender their passports and report twice a week to the police as part of their bail conditions.
