A HELICOPTER pilot in Zimbabwe was killed after the aircraft he was flying plunged into the Zambezi river in the north of the country, reports said Monday.

The body of the pilot, identified as Fin O'Donoghue has been taken to the capital Harare.

Investigators are still trying to identify the cause of the crash, which occurred on Thursday afternoon. O'Donoghue was reported to have been flying alone.

“As he was navigating along the Zambezi river, it (the helicopter) crashed into the river, killing him,” police spokesman Andrew Phiri told the Herald.

The Zambezi, which forms a natural boundary with neighbouring Zambia, is popular for fishing and canoeing safaris. Fatal light aircraft crashes are fairly rare in the southern African country.

O'Donoghue is reported to have been a resident of Harare, as is the owner of the helicopter. – Sapa-dpa.
