KELVIN Mushangazhike, a former Fire Batteries, Dynamos, AmaZulu and Young Warriors striker has been detained by South African authorities and thrown into the notorious Lindela Detention Centre awaiting deportation to Zimbabwe.

Mushangazhike, who played for Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa at the height of his career, was picked up during a training session with Mvela Golden League side Ga-Rankuwa on Monday last week, reports said.

Police and Home Affairs department officials carried out the raid, timed exactly two weeks after his work permit expired.

Home Affairs spokesperson Mantshele Tau confirmed that the player, who was on Chiefs’ books between 2001 and 2003, was being held at the notorious Lindela Repatriation Centre in Mogale City.

“We confirm the arrest and detention of Kelvin Mushangazhike, a national of Zimbabwe,” the spokesperson told the Sunday World newspaper. “He was taken to the departmental holding facility on May 15 for detention pending his deportation.”

The official added that Mushangazhike was in the country in contravention of the Immigration Act.

Mushangazhike is the younger brother of former Manning Rangers striker Gilbert, who was the leading South African PSL goal-scorer in the 2000-2001 season. Gilbert is in the Zimbabwe national team to face Morocco on June 3.

After leaving Chiefs, Kelvin played for Black Leopards before moving to Vietnam, where he played for just under a year before returning to Zimbabwe.
