SA crime wave blamed on Zim military

A SOLDIER was arrested on Thursday after a Zimbabwean woman was shot upon entering South Africa illegally, Limpopo police said.

Superintendent Ronel Otto said the shooting happened on Wednesday near the Beit Bridge border between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

"A 35-year-old SA National Defence Force member was handed over to police by the military this morning (Thursday) in connection with the shooting."

Otto said the 25-year-old woman crossed the border in a group from Zimbabwe.

They were sitting under a tree on the South African side of the border near Musina when they heard gunshots.

"They saw a defence team patrolling in the area and scattered. The woman was apparently shot while trying to run away," Otto said.

Otto said she was hit in the left buttock and was taken to hospital by the soldiers.

"It is also alleged that the soldier took her purse containing a cellphone and some cash."

Otto said the soldier was charged with armed robbery and attempted murder and was expected to appear at Musina Magistrate Court on Friday morning.

She said the woman was still in hospital and faced arrest once she recovered. - Sapa
