Abnormal baby shocks Beitbridge town

By Mashudu Netsianda

A BABY boy was born at Beitbridge District Hospital on Saturday afternoon with unusual abnormalities, an incident that has shocked the community of the border town.

The District Medical Officer, Dr Tatenda Mawire told the Chronicle newspaper that the baby was born with a cleft lip in which the upper lip cannot close, an obliterated eye and a big head.

“A baby boy was born on Saturday afternoon with hydrocephalus (excessive fluid in the head or brains), a congenital split in the upper lip and a palate and the right eye is obliterated,” he said.

Dr Mawire said it was a genetic problem, which normally happens when the baby is in the formation stage.

However, he said the baby had a normal weight and was being fed using cup feed.

Dr Mawire said the problem of cleft palate and lip requires the operation by specialist doctors.

“The problem with the baby is that they are three problems which are inter twined hence making it impossible to deal with, but the problem of cleft lip and palate can be dealt with by specialist doctors and unfortunately there are no such doctors in the country so we advised the parents to go to South Africa. However, it is very expensive there,” he said.

Dr Mawire said the baby would be kept at the hospital until the parents were in a position to feed it on their own.

He could however not comment on the chances of its survival.

A relative of the mother of the baby disclosed that the mother had four other children three of whom had some abnormalities. The first child died.
