A WOMAN accused of being a witch was struck with a burning log on her head several times until she died, a court in Zimbabwe’s south-western district of Tsholotsho heard on Tuesday.

Thandazani Moyo, a 25-year-old man from Insuza’s Village 1A, Matabeleland North, is charged with first degree murder.

A magistrate referred the matter to the High Court for trial, and also directed that Moyo be examined by two state doctors under the Mental Health Act “in view of the manner that he committed the offence”, the Chronicle newspaper reported.

Prosecutor Fritz Madida told the court that on August 19 last month, Moyo arrived at his home at night and found his wife and children having retired to bed.

Without provocation, Madida alleged, he attacked his wife and children who fled to the victim, Margaret Mabhena’s homestead.

“He followed them wielding a burning log,” Madida said.

On arrival at Mabhena’s home, Moyo is alleged to have accused her of being a witch, before ordering her out of her sleeping hut.

Moyo is alleged to have force-marched her to a Mr Mjoza’s home, whom Moyo was accusing of being a wizard operating with Mabhena.

On the way to Mjoza’s home, the State will seek to prove, he struck her several times on the head with the burning log and she died instantly.

A bail application for Moyo will be heard on September 8.
