2007 Premier Soccer League Fixtures

MWANA Africa and Hwange are both 90 minutes from Division One football after weekend defeats to new CBZ Premier Soccer League champions Dynamos and Shooting Stars respectively.

Mwana Africa must beat Motor Action, and Hwange must pick a win away to Highlanders on the last day of the season to stand a chance of staying the premiership.

CAPS FC might have tailed the rest of the premiership pack all season, but they are making good their escape plan after a 5-0 massacre of Black Rhinos who stay in the danger zone.

Mwana Africa, beaten 3-0 by Dynamos, are now anchored at the foot of the table while Hwange, beaten 1-0 by Stars, are 15th. Black Rhinos take up the other relegation spot on 14th.

Relegation would be a sad ending for Mwana Africa -- winners of the CBZ Cup last year in only their first season in the league. They went on to reach the second round of the Confederations Cup.

Instability both on and off the field saw Mwana Africa struggle after their return from Africa, with players going on strike for improved bonuses before the second round, second leg tie against DRC’s TP Mazembe, whom they eventually lost to.

Influential team manager Milton Nyamadzawo quit in June followed out by managing director Fred Moyo, who joined Hwange, and the Bindura-based club hit rock bottom.

Willard Khumalo was then dismissed in October and replaced by his assistant Arthur Tutani and since then, Mwana Africa have been in a free fall -- losing five games and drawing two, with no win.

Relegation will spark a massive human auction as premiership clubs swoop for the club’s to players. Tawanda Mareya, Benjamin Marere, Thomas Sweswe, Chipo Tsodzo, Graham Ncube and Tendai Mwarura are likely to be snapped up.

For Hwange, their 19-year old flirtation with the top-flight league is nearing a painful end. With talented players like Carrington Gomba, Gilbert Zulu, William Shayanewako, Norman Njelele and Timothy Sibanda, Hwange’s position is all the more difficult to understand.

The coal miners axed their coach Paul Moyo and replaced him with two veterans of previous relegation battles -- Tavaka Gumbo and Nation Dube – but they have failed to dig themselves out of the mire.

Hwange must beat former champions Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday, and hope that either Black Rhinos, Monomotapa or Eastern Lions drop points from their respective matches.

CAPS United might just have pulled themselves safe from the relegation battle after a 1-1 draw with Motor Action. A superior goal aggregate (-1) to Black Rhinos (-10) means Nelson Matongorere can now start planning for next season.

Njube Sundowns took a battering away to Masvingo United on Sunday, losing 6-1. It’s 10 goals conceded in two games for the Bulawayo club who lost 4-0 against Hwange last week.

CAPS FC, spurred on by Kingstone Nkatha’s double, dismantled army side Rhinos 5-0 to move into safety, while limping former champions Highlanders picked up a point in a non-scoring draw away to Eastern Lions in Mutare.

Lancashire Steel were 3-2 winners over Monomotapa, while Chapungu dismissed Lengthens 3-0, through a Cuthbert Malajila hat trick.
