SOUTH Africa’s Orlando Pirates are reportedly chasing the signature of Highlanders goalkeeper Washington Arubi, New Zimbabwe.com can reveal.

The Buccaneers’ interest follows a snub by fellow South African team, Bloemfontein Celtic, who have refused to sell their goalkeeper, Postnet Omony.

The cross and bones Soweto club has turned its attention to Arubi who has been recommended by former Bosso hitman, Ralph Matema, who is now with Bucs.

Highlanders coach Methembe Ndlovu told South African TV that Pirates were chasing Arubi but did not give details.

“We have heard rumours that Pirates are interested in Arubi,” said Ndlovu, who is also reported to be courted by an un-named club in South Africa, “but as far as I know, nobody from Pirates has made a formal or informal approach for the goalkeeper.”

Arubi joined Bosso from Lancashire Steel in 2006 after long-serving shot stopper Tapuwa Kapini crossed the Limpopo River to join Platinum Stars.

Orlando Pirates, who have been impressive under the tutelage of Oscar Da Gama who replaced Congolese coach Bibby Mutombo, have been in top form after Da Gama rung the changes.

Da Gama has put six players on the transfer list although he is keeping their names a closely guarded secret.

The interest in Arubi signals the new coach’s lack of confidence in the Bucs’ first choice goalkeeper Francis Chansa.

Chansa has already lost his place to 18 year-old Senzo Meyiwa, who graduated into the first team together with Excellent Walaza when Da Gama was thrust into the hot seat.
