NJUBE Sundowns have been slapped with a record Z$1 trillion fine for their part in the chaotic scenes at Gwanzura Stadium that nearly caused the abandonment of their league match against Dynamos on May 21.

Njube threatened to walk-out over a dubious late penalty awarded to Dynamos, leading to a lengthy delay. Dynamos converted the penalty to win 1-0.

A judgment made available this week, but reached on June 10, says the Bulawayo club must pay the fine within 72 hours.

Sundowns said on Monday they had notified the PSL that they would appeal against both the judgment and penalty.

Sundowns were found guilty of misconduct in terms of Order 31 of the PSL rules and regulations which state that: “It is an act of misconduct on the part of a club where (31,1,2) its players, officials, servants or duly authorised (express or implied) representatives or supporters directly or indirectly interrupt, obstruct or disturb the normal proceedings of a game before, during or after the match…”

The judgment says should Sundowns fail to stump up the fine within 72 hours, the value of Z$1 trillion would be determined on the basis of the Barclays Inter-bank rate of the United States dollar current on the date of payment.

On June 10, the Barclays Inter-bank rate was USD to Z$1 750 000 000.

Sundowns secretary Tawengwa Hara said on Monday they had requested a postponement of the hearing as they could not send a representative to Harare, but they received no response from the league.
