CAPS United have become the second premiership team to fire their coach in the off-season following an announcement that their double winning coach Jostein Mathuthu has left the club after barely a season in charge.

After surviving relation on the last day of the season, United will not be taking any more chances with Mathuthu and have appointed their 1996 league title winning captain Lloyd Chitembwe as coach. He will be assisted by former Warriors player Kennedy Nagoli.

Last week, Highlanders terminated Reuben Tsengwa’s contract and replaced him with Madinda Ndlovu following a disappointing finish to the season in which they finished seventh.

United’s chief executive officer Maxwell Mironga said Mathuthu left the club after they “differed on the direction the club must take”.

“We believe the changes will benefit the club,” Mironga said.

CAPS United are Zimbabwe’s representatives in the 2009 African Confederations Cup after Mathuthu guided them to ABC Supr8 and CBZ FA Cup glory.

Reports say Mathuthu is owed some US$10 000 by United in unpaid salaries and bonuses from the cup success.

Chitembwe’s first major assignment on his return to CAPS United will be the Confederation Cup preliminary round tie against Victors FC of Uganda at the end of the month.

Chitembwe was in charge of last season’s early premiership pace-setters Kiglon. He kept them at the top for five consecutive weeks before a mid-season slump. He was eventually dismissed after the second transfer window closed in August.
