THE 2009 edition of the Nestlé Champion of Champions Charity Shield tournament has adopted a new format, featuring four teams instead of the two teams featured in the previous two years of the season opener.

Champions Monomotapa, CBZ FA Cup winners CAPS United, league runners up Dynamos and third finishers Njube Sundowns will take part in this year's competition.

Traditionally, the Charity Shield features league winners and the victors in the country's premier knockout cup competition.

The season opener began in 2007 and was won by Mwana Africa and then Dynamos last season, both teams beating Highlanders in the final.

A spokesman for Nestlé Zimbabwe said the decision to increase the number of participating clubs was made in consultations with ZIFA and the PSL, both of which agreed the increase would heighten interest and take the tournament to an even higher level of popularity.

“This year is the fiftieth anniversary of Nestlé’s operations in Zimbabwe and to celebrate the Golden Jubilee, it was decided to enhance our involvement in the increasingly popular Nestlé Champion of Champions Charity Shield tournament, which will start a full year of celebrations for Nestlé,” said the spokesman.

Dates for the tournament and details of the total sponsorship package will be unveiled at a special ceremony hosted by Nestlé Zimbabwe on February 10.
