THEMBA Ndlela is the new Highlanders chairman, taking over from Ernest Sibanda.

Ndlela was elected on Sunday morning, polling 141 votes against another aspiring candidate, Mandla Moyo, who was close with 124 votes.

Andrew Tapela polled the highest number of votes in taking the post of secretary at 188, relegating incumbent Horace Ndubiwa and Charles Moyo into second and third place respectively.

For the post of committee member, Wisdom Mabhena beat five other candidates with 80 votes.

Next year, the Highlanders members will go back to the polls to elect a vice chairman and treasurer.

Soon after his election, Ndlela laid out his vision for the club.

He said: “The senior team is the mainstay of Highlanders and the fact that they finished three points above relegation means there are a lot of things that need to be corrected.

“There is the administration part of it and as a big club, five people cannot run it. We need standing committees in finance, legal matters, marketing, club facilities and competitions that will assist in running the club.

“We need to reclaim our position in Zimbabwean football and in order to do that, we must ensure player contractual stability and have packages that will attract and retain staff. There has to be continuous acquisition of talent from within the club and outside.

“We also need to have a sound junior policy, a comprehensive youth development programme with a dedicated coaching structure.

“Pride has been lost and we must regain that. There should be no dual interests at Highlanders because we need commitment on critical club issues. We lost three
points to Motor Action because no one paid attention to detail.

“We have five members in the board instead of 12 that came when Kennedy Ndebele was the chairman. We need to get people into the board that will bring the
necessary expertise to this institution.

“We fired a coach mid-way through the season and we did not appoint one, why now at the end of the season? There must be consistency in making decisions.”
