DYNAMOS scored six minutes into stoppage time to snatch a shock 2-1 African Champions League victory over ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast in Abidjan on Saturday.

A blunder by central defender Moussa Ouattara allowed Philip Marufu time and space and he gave goalkeeper Daniel Yeboah no chance as the visitors completed a double over the former champions.

After soaking up first half pressure in perfect conditions at the compact Robert Champroux Stadium, Dynamos silenced the home crowd on 53 minutes when Marufu struck off a rebound.

Another rebound allowed ASEC to equalise 20 minutes later as a looping Antoine N'Gossan header came back off the crossbar and Cyriac Gohi Bi stabbed the ball over the line.

The result lifted the Harare side from bottom place to second and a home victory over five-time title holders Zamalek of Egypt next Sunday will take them into the semi-finals of the US$3,5m competition.

It also sealed a semi-finals place for leaders Al-Ahly of Egypt who drew 2-2 in a Cairo derby with Zamalek on Sunday. Al-Ahly are sure of finishing first and facing the Group B runners-up in the penultimate phase.

After eliminating defending champions Etoile Sahel of Tunisia in the final qualifying round, Dynamos launched their first mini-league campaign since 1999 with a 2-1 home triumph over ASEC.

But hopes of a place among the last four appeared to have evaporated when the most popular Zimbabwe football club lost away to Zamalek and home and away to perennial title favourites Ahly.

And after outclassing Zamalek in Abidjan two weeks ago, ASEC were expected to prove too strong for opponents they defeated 4-2 on aggregate in the final 10 years ago.

For all their possession the youthful Ivorians struggled to penetrate a defence backed by goalkeeper Willard Manyatera, who gave a near faultless performance.

Marufu, who had not scored in 10 previous Champions League outings this year, broke the deadlock by firing home from close range after Ghanaian Yeboah had parried his first effort.

ASEC pressed forward once teenage substitute Gohi levelled only to be caught out seconds before the Tunisian referee blew for full-time and left the Mimosas with little hope as their final fixture is in Cairo against Ahly.

In Group B on Sunday, Tout Puissant Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo upset pacesetters Cotonsport Garoua of Cameroon 2-0 to go top. The match between Enyimba of Nigeria and Al-Hilal of Sudan was postponed until Monday due to a waterlogged pitch. - AFP
