Chimbetu blasts record bosses over Matavire

By Showbiz Reporter

SIMON 'Chopper' Chimbetu has launched a blistering attack on record bosses for neglecting musicians and their families in times of distress.

Talking ahead of his tour of the UK later this month with South African kwaito star Zola, Chimbetu said record bosses had neglected the late Leonard Tembo, Paul Matavire and their families.

"All they (record bosses) care about is money. When you are selling records you are their number one friend, but once you fall on hard times they desert you," blasted Chimbetu.

Chimbetu hailed Matavire who died last month as "one of the greatest artistes of our time".

"His death emphasised the need for a union for us as musicians. He had done so much for music yet he died in a state of deprivation. He shouldn't have suffered the way he did," said Chimbetu.

Chimbetu also took a swipe at the Urban Grooves music genre which has taken Zimbabwe by a storm.

"Their music has no bass to start with," Chimbetu told the online radio station Afro Sounds FM. "They also lack originality. They don't have the staying power, the same as their music."

Chimbetu will use his UK tour to promote his new album 10 Million Dollar Reward.
