Armed robber Karimanzira dies in jail

By Staff Reporter

NORMAN Karimanzira, an armed robber who achieved notoriety when he stole a truckload of meat from the Cold Storage Company -- earning the nickname 'Cold Storage' -- has died in prison.

Karimanzira died on Tuesday morning, closing the chapter of one of Zimbabwe's most famous robbers.

Karimanzira was recently revealed to be HIV positive, and his health was failing.

A family spokesman told New Zimbabwe.com: "He died at the Chikurubi Maximum Prison hospital in the early hours of Tuesday."

Karimanzira -- who had gained legendary status for his high-profile criminal activities and
evading arrest -- was wheelchair bound at the time of death.

He was serving a six year-jail term for armed robbery and carjacking. He had at least another 40 pending cases ranging from armed robbery, car jacking to fire arms charges..

The offences Karimanzira was jailed for were committed during the height of his reign of terror between 2000 and 2001.

They include robbing two banks, pointing a firearm at a police officer, stealing cars and using the vehicles to travel to Swaziland, Mozambique and Zambia on fake documents.

Perhaps Karimanzira's notoriety is only rivaled by the exploits of Death Row jail breakers Stephen Chidhumo and Edmund Masendeke -- both later caught and hanged.
