Police boss jailed for attacking female officer
Ramson Mashonga had pleaded not guilty to assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm but was convicted by Plumtree resident magistrate, Gibson Mandaza earlier this week. Four months of his sentence were suspended for five years on condition that he is not within that period convicted of a similar offence. Mashonga did not stay long in jail as his lawyer, Sindiso Mazibisa of Cheda and Partners sprung him out when he made for an application for bail pending appeal against both conviction and sentence which was granted. He will have to wait a bit longer to know if he will go back to jail as the justice system in the country takes long to hear appeal cases, with the backlog dating back four years. Prosecuting, Namatai
Mugwasha told the court that sometime in June this year, Mashonga slapped
a fellow female officer on the left side of the face and according to
a medical report, she suffered permanent disability. |
