Man who 'raped' granny, 83, tracked by shoe print
By Lindie Whiz The incident happened in Tsholotsho communal lands, about 120km northwest of Zimbabwe’s second largest city of Bulawayo. On Tuesday, Dumezweni Nxumalo pleaded not guilty to a charge of rape when he appeared before acting Bulawayo regional magistrate Fadzai Mthombeni. Nxumalo has raised an alibi that he was in the company of his lover at the time that he is alleged to have committed the offence. He was remanded in custody to May 23 this month to allow prosecutor Khumbulani Ndlovu to make arrangements to bring Nxumalo’s lover to the witness stand. The elderly woman, who walks with the aid of a walking stick, took the witness stand and related her ordeal. The court heard that last week on Saturday, at around 4PM, the woman was in her field picking up some pumpkin vegetables when Nxumalo approached her asked if she had seen his cattle. The woman told Nxumalo she has not seen any cattle. During the conversation, the woman alleged, Nxumalo grabbed her by both hands and dragged her to a nearby bush. She screamed for help and Nxumalo threatened to kill her with a knife, which he said was in his pocket, the court heard. After she had stopped screaming, he allegedly ordered her to lie down and remove her skirt and undergarments. He allegedly raped her once before telling her to get up and dress and go home. He disappeared into
the bush and the elderly woman made a report to the village head and
a search party was launched and they tracked Nxumalo’s shoe print
leading to his arrest. |
