A HERDBOY from Chivhu communal lands in Mashonaland East Province was starting a 19-year jail term on Tuesday after he was convicted of raping a nine-year-old orphan while her grandmother attended a funeral.

Knowledge Nyevhe, 18, who is employed by a farmer in Gwara Village under Chief Mutekedza, had six years of his sentence set aside on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years, leaving him to serve an effective 13 years in prison.

He took advantage of the absence of the girl’s guardian and raped her in a kitchen hut, a Chitunwiza magistrate heard.

The girl was staying with her grandmother since the death of her parents in 2004, and she only knew Nyevhe as a neighbour’s worker who had served for a long time in the village as a herdboy.

The incident took place on June 5 this year.

Nyevhe sneaked into girl’s yard and called her into the kitchen.

Innocent and unsuspecting, the girl complied with the order before she was stripped naked and tripped to the ground.

The girl was raped once before she was threatened with death if she disclosed the case to her grandmother.

Instilled with fear, the little girl kept the rape case secret until her grandmother discovered some abnormalities on her two days later.

Upon being quizzed on what had happened, the girl revealed the ordeal leading to the arrest of Nyevhe by Chivhu police.

Nyevhe on Monday pleaded guilty to raping the girl before a Chitungwiza regional magistrate saying he was possessed with evil spirits.
