ZIMBABWEAN police are investigating the theft of the country's highest medal of honour awarded to the country’s late Vice President Simon Vengai Muzenda from the country’s National Museum in Harare.

Muzenda, who died in September 2003 a month before his 81st birthday, was together with the late second Vice President Joshua Nkomo posthumously bestowed with the Order of the Great Zimbabwe (Gold) on the eve of the country’s independence celebrations in April 2005.

Sources Monday said two officers from the Central Investigations Department (CID) division identified only as Munyonga and Niki visited the museum and made enquiries about the missing medal.

Munyonga said Monday: “We went to the museum and they said the medal was never brought to them. We are still working on the case and we will be meeting members of the Muzenda family soon."

Sources said a member of the Muzenda family visited the museum and noticed that the medal which was said to have been taken there was nowhere to be seen, resulting in a report being made to the police.

During the silver jubilee celebrations, President Robert Mugabe awarded medals to leading stalwarts of the country's war of liberation from white minority rule. Mugabe was criticised for rewarding his loyalists and omitting distinguished heroes such as the late Josiah Tongogara, Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo and Lookout Masuku.

Muzenda, a former teacher and carpenter who was married to a nurse, Maud, gave unreserved backing to Mugabe.
