POLICE on Tuesday evening swooped on the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) offices in Bulawayo saying they were looking for "subversive material or any other offensive material likely to incite public disorder", the party said.

At least 30 police officers took part in the operation, reportedly under the command of a detective assistant inspector Samakande. No arrests were made, and no material of interest had been found when the police finally left the offices, a party statement said.

"The police initially did not have a search warrant at the time they raided the offices. They later produced one and proceeded to carry out the searches but did not find anything," said the statement.

"They also proceeded to the MDC Regional Offices where they intended to carry out the same search but found the offices locked as the MDC officials had knocked off for the day.

"They have, however, left behind three officers who are guarding the offices possibly to ensure that nothing gets out of the offices until they complete their assignment."

The police have conducted numerous raids on MDC offices across the country. Most of the searches have yielded nothing, and the opposition party has complained that the raids are intimidation tactics by the ruling Zanu PF.
