FOLLOWING a tip-off by concerned suffering Zimbabweans, we today uncovered a ploy by an enemy of the people of Zimbabwe to derail the people’s victory in the March 31 2005 Parliamentary elections.

We got a message on one of our hotlines to advise that a Harare printing company was printing fliers informing the public that we have pulled out of the election because Zanu PF has refused to implement the SADC protocol, a plan obviously meant to discourage Zimbabweans from going to cast their vote on 31 March.

Our intelligence unit went to the offices of Trima Printers to verify the claim, and effected a citizen arrest on 5 officials of the company as they tried to escape. Millions of copies of the flier were recovered.

The company officials have since been handed over to the police at the Harare Central Police Station.

As a party, will not betray the people of Zimbabwe who overwhelming mandated the party to participate in this election. We disown the flier in circulation, and any others that may be intended to mislead Zimbabweans that we have pulled out of the election. As a people-driven party, the MDC will not reverse a people’s decision without consulting first with the people.

While it is true that the Mugabe regime has not fully complied with the SADC protocol on elections, we have already stated that we are participating in these elections with a heavy heart just to fulfill the wishes of the people of Zimbabwe, and also to emphasize our contention that in Zimbabwe elections are yet another terrain of struggle. We urge all eligible Zimbabweans to go out and vote in their millions in order to bring about a new Zimbabwe with food and jobs.

We are keeping an eye on the ball as we enter the election, and will expose any attempts to steal victory from the people of Zimbabwe.
