ZIMBABWEAN police have arrested two school teachers at Chinyika Secondary School in Goromonzi after a student claimed she had been raped and infected with HIV.

Police now say the sex scandal has been going on for at least two years, and have questioned the school's headmaster and his deputy.

Police have named the two teachers they have arrested as Muvengerwi Hwaire and Privilege Chamaitira, who will both appear in court this week, individually charged with rape.

Last Friday, police went back to the school and interrogated headmaster John Nota and his deputy, Takura Chinokwata. Police sources said the two men are also under suspicion for having love affairs with other girls at the school which is located about 40km from the capital, Harare.

Police say they believe the sex scandal has been going on since 2005, when girls at the school were abused by teachers and the cases went unreported. But some girls gained confidence when the Day of the African Child commemorations was held in the district by the Victim Friendly Court, police said.

One of the girls allegedly raped by Hwaire and Chamaitira was taken to Ruwa Rehabilitation Centre Hospital where a Dr Bernard Madzima examined her and she tested HIV positive.

Sources at the school said Hwaire was involved in a relationship with the girl
since 2005 when she was in Form One.

The girl was flattered by Hwaire who pretended to be single until the girl
discovered that he was married, police said. The discovery that the teacher was in fact married led to a break-up.

Well after the break-up, on June 27 this year, Hwaire allegedly dragged the girl to his house where he raped her.

The girl later reported the matter to the School Development Committee leading to the arrest of the teachers.

Meanwhile, the girl was in love with Chamaitira who is also accused of sexually abusing her.

New Zimbabwe.com heard that police are investigating shocking claims that the headmaster and his deputy were having relationships with some girls at the school in what could turn out to be one of the worst sexual abuse scandals at an educational institution.
