ZIMBABWEANS have been hit by a spate of price increases after a month-long ease -- a result of policy restrictions imposed by the country's central bank.

Commuter omnibus operators on Monday increased transport fares in urban areas by 50 percent, up from $200 to $300.

The increase came just hours after the government agreed to officially increase the price of bread from $210 to nearly $300 weeks after arresting bakers for overcharging.

A pint of beer recently shot up from $250 to $300 while a 300ml of Coca Cola went up from $250 to $300.

Transport companies say the new fare increase was triggered by rising gas prices.

Zimbabwe requires $40-million a month to meet its fuel demands, but the government has been struggling to secure a regular supply to meet national demand, allowing a fuel black market to thrive.
