COMMUTER omnibus fares went up by 35 percent Monday less than two months after a 50 percent hike.

Routes where commuters were paying $300 such as Waterfalls and Epworth now cost $400, while commuters who were paying $200 to places like Belvedere now have to fork out $300.

The hikes come in the same week that the government gazzetted the National Incomes and Pricing Commission Bill that will see those accused of overcharging being sentenced to up to three years in jail.

Recently, the government launched an operation that saw a number of company executives being arraigned before the courts for “overcharging” after selling their products above the government stipulated cost.

The private firms argue that the price controls, if adhered to, would result in company closures or shedding of staff.

Transport companies say the new fare increase were triggered by rising gas prices.

Zimbabwe requires $40-million monthly to meet its fuel demand, but the government has been struggling to secure a regular supply, allowing a fuel black market to thrive.
