ZUJ demands quick end to Zimpapers strike

TROUBLE AT THE HERALD

Sex scandal rocks Herald House

By Staff Reporter

THE strike by Zimbabwe Newspapers workers over corruption and mismanagement continued today with journalists' organisations calling for an amicable solution to the dispute.

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) and Zimbabwe Journalists for Human Rights (ZJHR) called on the company's management and other authorities involved to look into the allegations raised by the workers.

ZUJ secretary-general, Foster Dongozi, said in a statement: "We demand a quick and amicable resolution of the matter and we want to make it clear that we are ready for a protracted battle if need be."

Dongozi said Zimpapers management and Information Minister, Jonathan Moyo, must stop intimidating workers and look into the corruption and mismanagement allegations.

The ZJHR condemned the threats made against workers by Zimpapers management saying there is no point using long arm tactics when workers demand salary increases.

"It is no use to threaten the employees when they are raising issues that tentatively look genuine," said ZJHR spokesperson, Dumisani Muleya.

ZUJ said arms of law must take a swift response to the allegations by workers as they might lead to serious scandals in the company.

Zimpapers employees went on strike on Monday demanding a salary increment and complaining against "massive corruption" by chief executive officer, Justin Mutasa.

Mutasa could not be reached for comment as his secretary kept on saying he was in a meeting.
