A ZIMBABWEAN TV cameraman abducted from his Harare home last Thursday has been found murdered.

Edward Chikomba, a former technical director for Zimbabwe's state television, was seized from his home in the volatile township of Glen View 3.

Former colleagues, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of attacks, say Chikomba was a branch chairman for the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

The friends say Chikomba may have been targeted over suspicions that he recorded and passed on video footage of badly bruised opposition activists beaten in police custody to foreign journalists.

Chikomba was seized after enjoying a drink with friends. Five armed men in a 4x4 truck jumped out and pulled him to the car before fleeing the scene as Chikomba's friends moved to help.

"He was coming from a popular pub which almost exclusively caters for MDC supporters because it is owned by some MDC supporters," a friend said.

Chikomba's body was discovered on Saturday along the Kariba-Chirundu road near Darwendale.

Political temperatures have been high in Harare after police crushed an opposition rally last month and arrested top opposition leaders. An MDC supporter was shot dead in clashes with police.

Nelson Chamisa, the MDC spokesman said the party would make its response later Wednesday. There was no immediate reaction from the police.
