A REUTERS photographer has been detained in Zimbabwe for allegedly using a satellite phone to file pictures while covering the aftermath of recent elections, the news agency said Thursday.

Howard Burditt, a Zimbabwean national, had been in police custody since Monday, Reuters said on its website.

“As part of its pan-African news operations, Reuters has long had a legitimate and fully accredited bureau in Harare, and has always complied with Zimbabwean regulations with the aim of accurately reporting the news,” said a company statement.

A lawyer and the news agency’s correspondent Harare have had access to Burditt but he has not been charged.

There was no immediate comment on the case from police in Zimbabwe where the authorities say satellite phones must be registered before use.

A number of local and foreign journalists have been detained in Zimbabwe since the country held elections on March 29, including a New York Times correspondent who was later released. - AFP
